All REITs now can apply for a .REIT top-level domain name to use in their internet addresses instead of, or in addition to, the .com or other top-level domain names. The .REIT domain provides a new way for all members of the worldwide REIT community to enhance their identity as REITs in their online communications.
Interested REITs can apply for a .REIT domain name by going to the web site Register.REIT and following the instructions there.
Only REITs can take advantage of this new opportunity. NAREIT, working with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, operates the registry and will collect, review and approve applications from REITs to use the .REIT domain.
Domain names are available only to actual REIT entities and not to REIT sponsors, holding companies, or other affiliated entities. Eligible registrants are restricted to one .REIT domain name per eligible REIT. Additionally, the domain name to be registered must either correspond to the REIT’s legal trade name or be the name by which the REIT is commonly known, which may include acronyms, registered and common law trademarks, and exchange ticker symbols.
