REIT executives from across the country visited Washington, D.C. this week for Nareit’s annual Advocacy Day. This event provides the opportunity for the REIT community to engage in constructive dialogue with key policymakers in the House of Representatives and the Senate on the importance of REIT-based real estate investment on local communities.

Nareit member executives participated in 21 meetings with key policymakers, including: Republican Whip Sen. John Thune (R-SD); Republican Conference Chairman Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY); House Democratic Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA); and Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV).

Additionally, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, was presented with the annual Small Investor Empowerment Award, which was established on behalf of those people who invest in, are employed by, or derive other benefits from REITs and publicly traded real estate companies. The annual award recognizes public servants who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the ideals of free enterprise, economic growth, personal freedom, and unlimited opportunity for all Americans.
