Nareit Senior Vice President for Investment Affairs and Investor Education Meredith Despins recently delivered a presentation at the Florida Public Pension Trustees Association (FPPTA) Trustees School in Orlando, Florida.
The presentation, “REITs and Real Estate in Pension Portfolios,” focused on the importance of the real estate asset class and how investing in REIT-based real estate can help address priorities that have become critically important to pension investors over the last decade. These include: governance and control over real estate investments; the ability to efficiently invest fully in the real estate asset class, including “new economy” real estate; and maximizing investment performance and cost management.
Nareit’s presentation was part of the continuing education curriculum of the FPPTA’s Public Pension Trustees certification program. This is the fourth year Nareit has been asked to speak at the program. The school’s curriculum is intended to provide new and experienced trustees of Florida’s public sector pension plans with information on investments and pension plan operations and enable them to effectively fulfill their responsibilities on behalf of their pension systems.
This year’s program was attended by more than 600 trustees, staff, and service providers to Florida’s public pension plans. FPPTA member systems include more than 260 pension boards representing police officers, firefighters, and general government employees.
