Bill Bayless, CEO of student housing REIT American Campus Communities (NYSE: ACC), has been named the EY 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year winner in the Real Estate, Construction and Lodging category.
EY said Bayless’ vision of the student housing business model “defied conventional business wisdom.”
Bayless launched American Campus Communities in 1993 and took the company public in 2004. Starting with four employees, the company now has a staff of 3,500 nationwide, EY noted.
In his acceptance speech, Bayless said the company’s mission provides “an incredible opportunity to impact the lives of young people.”
